| The Women’s
Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 became effective in
October. The law ensures that women covered under group
and non-group health plans are covered for medical benefits
for mastectomies. The required coverage must include:
- Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy has
been performed
- Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce
a symmetrical appearance
- Prostheses and physical complications of all stages of mastectomy,
including lymphedemas.
Coverage will be accordance with the same deductibles and
co-insurance provisions that apply to other benefits under
the plan, and treatment will be determined by attending
physician and patient.
